LUCAS Receives Design Award 2001

Lund, May 2001

The annual competition Construction and Design was instituted by NUTEK, Ny Teknik and Svenska Mässan. The purpose of Construction and Design is to encourage and reward new constructions where designers and constructors have succeeded in combining attractive design with functionality.

The competition has now been organised 11 times and around 60 competition entries yearly are submitted. Among earlier winners (1999) C Technologies with the electronic C-pen can be mentioned.

The mechanical heart compression device LUCAS will secure the second prize 2001. "We have been most eager to combine functionality with a user-friendly and patient-friendly design", says Peter Sebelius, R & D Manager of Jolife, who has developed the product in cooperation with Hampf Industrial Design.

LUCAS performs mechanical heart massage by compressions of the patient's chest, by using the same principle as at manual heart massage. However, as opposed to manual heart compressions, LUCAS continuously gives optimally efficient heart compressions, also over longer periods of time. LUCAS can also continue to run during transportation.

"It has been a privilege to be a part of the development of LUCAS, since it is a matter of saving lives", Peter Sebelius concludes.
