LUCAS CPR receives market approval in Japan
Lund, Sweden, 23rd of March 2009
Jolife AB announces that it last week received SHONIN approval from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) to market the LUCAS Chest Compression System, a medical device that assists rescuers in providing mechanical chest compressions during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). LUCAS CPR helps maintain life-sustaining blood flow in cardiac arrest patients.
LUCAS CPR will be marketed and sold to hospitals and emergency medical services in Japan exclusively by Physio Control Japan, a division of Medtronic Inc., which is a leader in manufacturing and marketing of defibrillators. There are close to 5000 ambulances and 9000 hospitals in Japan.
“We are very excited to add LUCAS CPR to our portfolio of life-saving equipment, and believe that this product will improve the care for cardiac arrest patients as well as the work environment for rescuers,“ says Hideki Matsuo, Physio Control Business Manager in Japan.
“This approval is a milestone for Jolife AB, first and foremost because we are now able to provide Japanese rescuers with an easier, safer and more effective treatment method than traditional CPR. We look forward to start build sales in Japan, which is the second largest market for medical devices in the world,” says Erik von Schenck, CEO of Jolife AB.
LUCAS is already approved in the United States, Canada, Australia and in Europe.
About LUCAS™ CPR
The LUCAS™ Chest Compression System helps ambulance and hospital personnel to save patients suffering sudden cardiac arrest. The device performs continuous mechanical chest compressions to maintain blood flow to the brain and heart. International resuscitation guidelines issued in 2005 stress the importance of effective and uninterrupted chest compressions prior to defibrillation. LUCAS performs chest compressions in accordance with these guidelines, without risking quality variations or tiring out personnel. The mechanical CPR device has been shown to increase blood circulation in the patient and to be as safe as manual compressions. LUCAS CPR further allows for a safe transportation for the rescuers and for simultaneous interventions such as defibrillation and angiography.
